英作文で最も大事なことは、日本文を十二分に吟味することである。①では、「考えてみると」と「～と思う」がダブっているので気をつけること。「因果な」はこの場合、「不運なめぐり合わせの」という意味であろう。｢人間は｣ という主語を何にするかは、②以降の文の主語を何にするか、との関係も考えて決定すること。

In my opinion, man is an ill-fated being.

If you ask me, people are ill-fated creatures.

②の文の意味は、「ある面や物が良くなれば、必ず悪い面や物が現れる」とか「一方で進歩すれば、また一方で後退している」という意味であろう。

In some ways we're advancing, but in other ways we're regressing.

③は「進歩があれば、必ずそれに伴う弊害がある」と考える。

For every bit of progress we make, there are accompanying evils.

④は、一文で処理するには日本文が長すぎるので、二つ、または三つの文に分解して再表現し直した方がよいだろう。つまり、「（前述の）典型的な例は、産業は高度成長したけれども、それに伴って人間の心は空洞化したことである。」という文を②,③の文との繋がりから考えて先に書き、最後の結論の文として、「このことが今日の深刻な問題となっている」としてはどうだろう。

A typical example is that, although our industry has grown by leaps and bounds, this advancement brings with it an ever-deepening feeling of emptiness. I think this is one of today's most serious problems.
■訳例２
